Q1: Have you find time to watch the whole movie?

I can't wait. I've only seen few scenes that Tim showed me when he was still working on the movie.
It was really hard for me not to see the whole movie and that made me even more excited.
I can't wait to be tonight at the premiere, and the Prince will be there!

Q2: You will hear your song at the end ...

(laughs) Oh my god yes! I will probably have a huge smile.

Q3: So, how did you get involved in such a project?

That's an interesting story. I have a clothing line called Abbey Dawn and I just got a tattoo with that name (she showed us her brand new "Abbey Dawn" tattoo on her left arm).
I was designing clothes inspired by Alice in Wonderland and I had to go to Disney to see various images and designs from the movie.
When I arrived, I saw all these images and I was very excited.
I started thinking that it was going to be an awesome movie with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton.
And I said to myself "I want to write a song for this movie!".
I asked Disney if I could write something.
They asked Tim and he said "Ok give her a try".
I met him and gave him my song, he liked it and said it was perfect for the movie and that he will use it.

Q4: What was your first reaction when Tim said yes?
I was so excited because I worked a lot on this song, thinking about Alice, the movie, her trip.
I wanted to write a song that Tim could be proud of.
When he called me saying it was ok, I couldn't believe it.

Q5: Was it asy and fast to write "Alice (Underground)"?

Well, when I got the agreement from Disney, I went to my piano and started to write the song.
Then when I saw images from the movie, I came back to my piano to finish the song. That's it.
I really wanted the song to reflect the movie, I didn't want to write a pop song for radios but for a Tim Burton's movie.
So I wanted something dark, dramatic, theatrical and emotional.
I think I succeed in.
The production, the instruments and the piano make the song a bit scary and I like it.

Q6: The video clip is very beautiful ...

Yes I think it's my favourite. I play Alice, I wear a victorian dress. I run, I fall in a hole, I run through the forest, I arrive at the tea table with the mad man.
Have you seen the video clip?

Yes ...

Avril: Cool, so you know what I am talking about. I really like this video clip because there are images from the movie and I can say that Johnny Depp is in one of my music video (laughs), it's very cool.

Q7: When I think the video clip, I think you could have been Alice ...

Thanks! I am Alice number 2. Actually, when I shooted the video, during the 2 days everybody called me Alice.

Q8: Did you dream about the movie?

(laughs) Everything around was so Alice, so I probably dreamt about it, even my official website is about Alice now, it is written "Avril in Wonderland".
I am happy and this song will be on my fourth record.
I will play it on stage, it is really a part of my setlist.
And I think I could also add designs from the movie on the stage if I want, that would make sense because I have been involved.
That's really a huge movie and I think many people will watch it.
Even if I am involved at a small ladder, that's the coolest thing in the world.

Q9: But it's not the first time that you are involved in a soundtrack ...

Yes I wrote a song called "Eragon", it was a different experience, I didn't shoot a music video for this one.
This time it's interesting because everybody knows Alice and her story, I read it when I was a little girl, it's a part of the culture.
And I like the fact that Alice is a young girl and that at the end of the movie you can hear another young girl singing 'tripping out, spinning around, I'm underground, I fell down", it works well.
I like that this part of the song is at the end of the movie.

Q10: People will keep this song in mind and they will make the link between the song and the movie ...

Yes it's awesome, even if I don't want it to be a huge hit, it's a song I want to play on stage, as a single.
I think people will make the link between the movie and the song, you are right.
I really like to sing my singles on stage because the audience reacts well and it gives me energy, it means a lot to me (laughs).

Q11: Your fans are really happy to see you again with a new song ...

That's funny because I am said that I take a lot of time between my records.
But to be honest, I don't need to release a record every year.
It's a whole creative thing, and I need to live, being inspired.
I don't feel the need to release records after records.
I write my own music, I need time to do that, and I don't want to hurry.
I think people who release a record too fast after the last don't write for themself in general.

Q12: Maybe they are afraid to be forgotten ...

I don't feel touched by that.
When it's about me, I try to find the balance between being a musician and having anormal life.
If I were always on the road, that wouldn't be normal (laughs).
That's really funny but I think it's necessary to take breaks.
When I am home, I work a lot.
I am busy with my clothing line and my fragrance.

New record in June

Q13: When can we expect new songs?

The new record is done.
I can't tell you the name yet and all I can say is that the song titles
you see on the internet are fake.
I will release a single in April and the record in June.
I will be ready to hit the road and I will stop in France.
I always stop in France, my father was born here.

Q14: Was it the difference between promoting a single from a soundtrack and a single from a record?

Movie world is so different. For example, yesterday I did something called "press junket", it's a crazy thing.
I did 70 interviews of few minutes. I have never done this before for my previous records.
I did it for Over The Hedge, it was the same.
I think it's fascinated to be interviewed by so many people in 5 hours.
When it's about music, I go on tour first on every country to promote the new record, and then I go back for the tour.
When it's about movie, the promo is in 1 ou 2 cities for the whole world.

Q15: Can I say that "Alice" reflects your new record?

No, this song is different from the others.
You can add it to the atmosphere, but the others are not that dark.

Q16: But your records have always had dark songs and some softers ...

You are absolutely right, my records were like that, but not this one.
Before it had a ballad song, a mid-tempo song and a "punky poppy rocky song" (laughs).
This record is more homogeneous, the songs are more similars, the atmosphere doesn't change that much and I think it's cool.
I like to think that people will hear this record when they are cooking.
And I like to think that it will touched a mature audience.
It's time for me to change a bit and go through what I am today.
This is what I want to write and what I feel.

More piano

Q17: Will we hear more piano?

Definitely. Most of my songs were written with the piano whereas before it was with the guitar.
You can hear a lof of piano, acoustic guitar, strings on this new record.
But I will play all my favourite songs from all my records because it's important to play all the singles.

Q18: Can you tell us few words about the others artists on "Almost Alice"?

I heard the song from The All-American Rejects, that's a cool song.
It's really awesome to be a part of this huge record with so many artists and bands. It's a cool project.
The record is really special because every songs is inspired by the movie.
It's a honor to be a part of this record because all the artists took time to be inspired and creative to tell a story.

A long and large trip

Q19: Do you think you are similar to Alice?

I think she is a character that you can feel because she has many emotions, she is in this trip, with a strange atmosphere.
I think it's life, a long and large trip with up and down, crazy ... and I think it's my answer (laughs)!

Q20: Do you think you could have asked Tim and Disney few years ago?

That's a good question and to be honest, I was asked to write songs before but I didn't feel it.
I have to be in a song-writing mood to write this kind of song.
I was in this mood when I recorded my new album so I took the opportunity to ask Disney.
And you can ask me to write songs as much as you want, I have to be in the mood.
It's often a matter of time.
But I can write a song in 2 sec if I want for a movie like this one.
But this time I am the one who asked first (laughs)!

Q21: Is there a moment when it's difficult for you to write?

When I am on tour I don't write, even if I think I will write when I am on my next tour.

Q22: When you asked about Disney and Tim, did you believe it was going to work or not?

When I was said "ok you can try" and when I wrote the song, I didn't know they could use it.
I had to wait.
I waited at home, I had my fingers crossed!
I hoped so much.
It was a rewarding experience.
I was very happy to be inspired by the movie and by the character of Alice.
